What's New In 2009?      

Professional membership
A professional level of membership costing $45 per annum giving early bird schedule and programs (pdf format only), email alerts and season passes to the Church & Studio has been introduced for 2009. Contact the Secretary for details.

Revisions
Revisions have been made to the Notes & Conditions and to the regulations concerning the submission of own choice selections. Please read pp * - * in the Schedule carefully.  

Entries
Entry forms may be submitted by hand, post or email. Payment may be made by cash, cheque or direct debit. See Entry forms for details.

Vocal & Choral
The TS Burstow Opera Gala Night will take place on Saturday 9 May 2009 at 6.30pm in the Studio, Empire Theatre with 1st prize of $2000 and runner up prize of $500. The six highest ranking performers from the FG Chamberlin Aggregate (Sections 25 – 27) scheduled for Saturday 9 May at 12.30pm will be eligible to compete.

Vocal solos with backing track (Sections 63 – 65) have been introduced for Primary & Secondary students.

Primary Vocal Solos have changed to Year Levels instead of age groups with male and female vocalists combined.

Section 3 Contemporary Chorus Open has been introduced and will be paired with Section 2 Sacred Choral Open to form the newly created Mansel Jones Memorial Trophy & Aggregate with prize of $200 donated by the Choral Society.

The John Penny Memorial Trophy & Aggregate with prize of $200 donated by the Choral Society has been established for Vocal Solos 16 – 18 years Secondary (Sections 42, 43, 52), Music Theatre Solo 16 – 18 years Secondary (Section 56) and Song by Australian Composer 16 – 18 years Secondary (Section 59).  

Own Choice Selections
Note that “Own Choice Selections” may be submitted from one week prior to the start of the Eisteddfod (see page viii in the Schedule).

Piano
- The piano Aggregates have been revised. Please check sections carefully if you wish to be eligible for an Aggregate.  
- Competitors may now select any composition by JS Bach for Sections 127 – 129.
- Jazz/Popular pieces may not be performed in the age solos i.e. Sections 112 – 122.
- Section 123 – Piano Solo Preparatory is for performers learning for one year or less.
- Prize money for Sight Reading has been increased to encourage competitors to enter!

Instrumental
The instrumental Aggregates have been revised. Please check sections carefully if you wish to be eligible for an Aggregate.

Graded Instrumental Solos, an Instrumental Quick Study (18 years or over) and an Any Other Wind Solo (Secondary) have been introduced. Some Concerto and Sonata for Solo Instrument sections have been split into String and Woodwind/Brass so that competitors are adjudicated by a specialist.  

Rock Bands
Rock Bands will become part of the Toowoomba Eisteddfod in 2009! The
OWEN RAY INTERNATIONAL MUSIC SECONDARY ROCK BAND section will take place on Sunday 19 July in the Empire Theatre Auditorium. See Section 441 for details.

Speech and Drama
Check the Schedule! New sections in Speech and Drama include Impromptu Speech (“2 minutes please”) sections for Secondary (Years 8 – 10 and Years 11 - 12) and Verse Speaking Novice sections for Primary.  

Dance
Dance Group sections for Years 8 – 9 and Years 10 – 12 have been introduced for 2009 and will be scheduled on Sunday 19 July. It is hoped that additional sections for Primary & Secondary solos and groups will be introduced in 2010.

Literary
To increase interest in this area, the literary sections have been significantly reviewed and a number of new initiatives introduced including publishing opportunities, cash prizes, trophies and an author mentoring program. We seek the support of the local community to ensure that our children are given a voice through writing - the only medium of communication which is truly accessible by everyone.

Aggregate levels
Aggregates levels are now termed Advanced (18 years or over), Intermediate (16 to 18 years, Secondary), Sub-Intermediate (12 to 15 years, Secondary), Junior (12 to 13 years, Primary) and Sub-Junior (11 years or under). Intermediate and Sub-Intermediate levels combine as Secondary (12 – 18 years, Secondary) and Junior and Sub-Junior levels combine as Primary (10 – 13 years, Primary).

Championships
Championships now include a runner up prize of $50 in addition to the 1st prize of $100.

Major Bursaries, Prizes and Awards
The winners of the aggregate prizes in the relevant sections and age levels will become the nominees for the John Burstow Memorial Trophy, Paul Morton Memorial Trophy, Rimmer Family Award, McGregor Bursaries, Les Enchelmaier Memorial Bursaries and the Mayor’s Encouragement Award. The Management Committee will continue to make the final decision regarding these awards.
